The following is a glossary commonly associated with Digital and Internet/Interactive and Digital Ad FormatsTerminology


Bandwidth
The amount of content that can be sent through a connection. From slowest to fastest data transfer, ISDN, 56K lines, T-1 and T-3 lines are leased digital phone-lines.

BBS
Bulletin Board System for computerized meetings and announcements. The system allows people to carry on discussions, upload and download files, and make announcements without being connected at the same time.

Bit
Binary digit, 1 or 0. Eight bits grouped together represent upper and lower case letters, number, punctuation, and characters and are labeled a byte or character. K (Kilobyte) = 1000 bytes, M (Megabyte) = 1,000,000 bytes, G (Gigabyte) = 1,000,000,000 bytes.

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript File)
The accepted graphic file format involving a bitmap image and PostScript code read by a printer. (See PDF for the new standard.)

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
An Internet standard that ensures error-free transmission of program and data files through the telephone system.

HTML (HyperText Markup Language)
System of coding used to mark up web sites, which are computer files made publicly available on the World Wide Web for interpretation by Web browsing programs.

ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)
Basically a way to move more data over existing phone lines.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

A standard for a common graphics format used to store digitally encoded pictures.

Morphing
A special animated graphics technique in which one image appears to change and become something entirely different.

OCR (Optical Character Recognition)
OCR devices scan written or typed text and transform it into a computer-readable form.

PDF (Portable Document Format)
The latest Adobe application software format quickly becoming the standard for ad files, replacing the EPS standard of the 1980's.

PPP (Point to Point Protocol)
The protocol that allows a computer to use a regular telephone line and modem to make a TCP/IP connection. (See TCP/IP)

TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol)
A universal standard that allows different operating systems like Macintosh, Windows, UNIX and others to talk to one another.

URL (Universal Resource Locator)
The standard way to give the address of any resource on the Internet. A URL looks like the BBS domain name - http://www.bbsadpro.com
