U.S. Financial Incentives for TV Commercial Productions
States' benefit packages vary widely in competition to attract production work.
Advertisers today can take advantage of recently adopted competitive financial production incentives being offered by a majority of states to save costs. As the production industry has looked for ways to save expenses by working more and more out of the country in lower cost film centers, U.S. states have fought back by passing legislation to draw more production work into their boundaries.
The incentives range from credits against state income taxes that are completely transferable to loans or rebates based on how much is spent in state. Nine states are now offering different levels of transferable credits that can be sold by advertisers directly to local taxpayers or to tax credit brokers. Connecticut currently offers the best of these deals and will return 30% of what is spent in the state.
The transferable tax credits make a strong case for completing part if not all of a production, shooting, editing and finishing in one of the states to offer them (Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, and Rhode Island); it's a terrific cost savings opportunity for all commercial advertisers!
Advertisers that want to save money and are considering working in the U.S.A. for a future production should definitely take advantage of these offers to recoup upwards of 30% of their production costs. The best options for good production sites with large savings are working in Phoenix, Connecticut, Atlanta, Chicago, and Boston; all of which have good crew and talent pools.
