Green Guidelines for the TV Commercial & Print Production Industry
Suggested policies for a more environmentally friendly production community
Agencies:
Cut down on the amount of paper used by initiating a file sharing site available through the internet for each job that will allow all participants to access information using access codes and multiple levels of security as necessary.
Cut down car service use by using public transportation.
Work with as many local production people/companies as possible to cut down on the necessity of air travel.
Take full advantage of the internet to reduce travel time and costs by conducting on line meetings
Obtain final approvals on storyboards, layouts and other printable material to avoid printing multiple versions.
Production Companies:
See above.
Capture images in digital media instead of film negative to cut down on the amount of film elements in storage.
Look first to rental houses for props and wardrobe to cut down wasted purchases.
Donate purchased props and wardrobe to humanitarian groups that support the homeless and underprivileged.
Avoid using lauan, the Asian rain forest wood veneer hardwood commonly used to cover set flats, by using alternate materials.
Explore ways to reuse set materials after shoot or donate materials to housing groups like Habitat for Humanity.
Have crew people bring their own coffee mugs/drinking cups to cut down on the use of paper or Styrofoam cups.
Replace plastic water bottles with a 5 gallon water dispenser.
Replace individual soda cans with larger 2 liter bottles to serve from.
Recycle used plastic, aluminum, and paper.
Hire caterers and craft service people that only use locally grown produce.
Donate leftover food to local Food Banks.
Use as many hybrid and alternate fuel vehicles as possible.
Arrange car pools or bus transportation from a central public transportation hub.
Use emails to circulate call sheets and directions.
Post Production Companies:
See above.
End the practice of providing car services.
After transferring elements to a digital asset management server recycle and reuse digital stock and hard drives on a different job.
Encourage agencies and clients to view cuts on line rather than creating multiple versions on CD and sending them via messenger or courier.
